More often it is not that men do not vote as they want to, but it is that thej' will not vote until they fiud a candidate ready to give them something for that vote, and this too often brings our elections to the low level of corruption and gives the man with the most boodle or the one, at least, who will spend it mo6t freely, the best opportunity. Every man who has taken part in politics knows this to be a fact, whether Democrat or Republican, and for the general welfare of all, we believe the time is at hand when the political heelers should be cut off at the pockets and deprived of their avocation. The County Court which adjourned sine die last Saturday has made a good record of service to the people, as have all the retiring county officers who surrendered their offices to their successors last Saturday evening, and the Herald takes pleasure in speaking this word of praise for the good work done. On Friday Colvin had taken a load of stove wood to Mtn. View, and as soon as Thomas saw him he renewed the quarrel and had an open knife in his hand. Thomas tried to get on the wsgon and struck Colvin twice with the knife, cutting holes in Colvin'a clothing, but did not wound him. At that Colvin struck Thomas a heavy blow across the top of the head, felling him unconscious, and two or three physicians 'give little hope of his recovery. Colvin was uot arrested, as many saw Thomas assault him and knew he acted in self defense.

To avoid farther trouble, Colvin sold his farm at a sacrifice and left the country. part of the country seemed to have a nice time. Everett Hubbs, who has been staying at Lon Seott's for the past year, is at home. Zee who is teaching our school, spent Christmas at home. She was accompanied back by her sister, Nell, who stayed last week with friends on Ashley.
